Plastic Recycling is instrumental in reducing the need for extracting, refining, and processing raw materials – all of which create substantial air and water pollution.
Though the Village of Lake Success's website states that collection for recycling will occur every Wednesday, such policies do not include many recyclable materials and thus residents do not regularly recycle plastic. One resident states, "I feel very surprised that such a beautiful village does not pay much attention to the garbage recycling which is critical for Environmental Protection!" Another notes, "I never see more than one garbage can per house."
Lake Success needs more than just a few people recycling. To ensure that this Village is doing its part in protecting the environment, we need the collective action of its residents, and therefore we are asking that the Lake Success administration enforce recycling.
We understand that Great Neck is one of the most politically divided counties in New York, and so we hope that in creating a petition, we can show administrators that its residents want to institute a recycling program.
We are asking the Village of Lake Success to:
1) Institute small subsidies through waste collection tax cuts for residents who volunteer to separate non-recycling and recycling trash.
2) Include more recycling days and collect recyclable trash on recycling days.
3) Start a bottle-for-coins machine so the state can buy back bottles. This encourages residents to save their cans and bottles.
One recommendation is to distribute recycling bins and trash bags to encourage residents to recycle. Lake Success citizens should also be well informed of the regulation changes, and we recommend that the Village hosts virtual events to promote recycling. We also encourage administrators to create a designated public garbage can for dangerous wastes such as batteries or lighters to avoid injury.
